Retail sales and the control group that gets ignored by headlines

A retail sales release has a headline number and several variations: excluding autos, excluding autos and gas, and the control group used in GDP calculations. The headline gets the first reaction. The control group often gets the second.
Traders react to a surprise in the main figure, and the market jumps. Within a minute, someone notices that the control group moved the other way, and price reverses. Similar patterns occur with core versus headline CPI and durable goods versus core durables.
Knowing which component matters to the market at that time helps. If economists are focused on consumer strength as a signal for growth, the control group draws attention. If the focus is inflation, then components related to prices might.
It's also a good example of why speed isn't everything. A trader who clicked in the first second on the headline may be right about the headline and wrong about the market's actual reaction a minute later.
Building a small list of "what to check first" for each major release prepares the eyes to look in the right place.
Which sub-component has tripped up your read on a release most often?
