Unscheduled central bank speakers

A central banker gives an interview on a Tuesday afternoon. No calendar event. A single sentence about future policy moves a currency forty pips in a minute.

Scheduled data gives scalpers a chance to prepare, reduce exposure, or sit out. Unscheduled remarks don't. And they're more common than many traders think. Officials talk at conferences, on TV, in parliamentary hearings, and in written Q&A.

What makes it dangerous is the lack of widened spreads beforehand. Liquidity providers haven't pulled back. Positions are open with normal-sized stops. When the headline hits, the move may blow through levels before anything can be done.

A reasonable defense is to follow the schedule of speeches, even if the content is unknown. Calendars usually list them with low or medium impact, but the leaders of the central banks, especially the chair, can be market-moving.

Squawk services and fast news feeds help, though they come with a cost and a delay.

Some traders keep a quick rule: when a major central bank official is scheduled to speak, tighten the setup or step aside.
