The first thirty minutes of the London-New York overlap

Volume peaks when both London and New York are active, roughly 8am to noon New York time. Many scalpers focus entirely on this window. Within it, though, the first half hour behaves differently from the rest.

New York arrives with US data, equity futures opening, and fresh order flow. The first few minutes frequently produce a burst of volatility in one direction. By the half-hour mark the move may be completed, extended, or fully reversed.

Spreads are tight and liquidity is deep, so the execution side is friendly. The risk is whipsaw. The first move often gets tested, sometimes faded, and a signal that fired at 8:05 can be invalidated by 8:20.

A subtle detail: US data releases at 8:30 New York create their own distortions, and the preceding fifteen minutes see liquidity pulled back from the market. Strategies that work at 8:00 may need a break at 8:20 to 8:35.

Splitting the overlap into smaller windows and checking results for each gives a better picture than treating four hours as a single block.

Which fifteen-minute slice of the overlap has produced the best results over the last quarter?
