Month-end rebalancing: the flows that don't care about charts

On the last trading days of a month, large asset managers rebalance portfolios. If US equities rallied hard, foreign investors holding them may need to sell dollars to bring currency hedges back in line. If they fell, the opposite.

These flows tend to concentrate around the London 4pm fix, and they often run against whatever the month's trend was. A strong dollar month can end with a sharp dollar sell-off in the final afternoon, with no news to explain it.

For a scalper, this is the kind of move that breaks a momentum model. Technical signals say continue, flows say reverse, and flows win for an hour.

The effect varies. Some months show nothing. Others show a clear pattern. Estimating the direction is possible by looking at how equity markets performed relative to the previous month-end, though even then it is a guess.

A quiet response is to reduce size or sit out the final afternoon of the month when the signal contradicts a likely rebalancing direction.

Could month-end days be mapped against fix-time moves reliably, or is the pattern too inconsistent to trust?
