Reading the tape without a tape

Equity traders have time and sales: each trade, its size, and whether it hit the bid or lifted the offer. Forex doesn't have a public tape, so retail traders improvise.
One method is tick direction. Each quote update is classified as up or down relative to the previous one. A run of upticks suggests buying pressure. A run of downticks suggests selling.
It's a crude proxy. The quotes might be moving because a provider adjusted its price, not because someone traded. But in practice, sustained tick direction correlates with real flow, especially during liquid hours.
A tool that counts upticks versus downticks over the last 30 seconds gives a quick read. A reading of 80 percent upticks, with a price that isn't rising, suggests absorption: someone is selling into the buying.
That divergence between tick pressure and price movement is one of the few retail-accessible clues about hidden orders.
It's noisy, and it takes practice to interpret. But watching the ratio over time builds a sense of what normal looks like on each pair.
If a tick-direction counter was built, did the readings add anything beyond plain price action?
