Balance, equity, and the floating loss that hides in plain sight

The balance on the platform only changes when trades close. Equity includes the floating profit or loss on open positions. Looking at the wrong one gives a false picture.
A scalper with several trades open may see a stable balance while equity is falling. A margin call depends on equity, not on balance.
The mistake is making decisions from the balance. A day that feels fine because the balance is up can hide a floating loss that is eating margin.
Keeping the equity and free margin visible on the chart or in a corner of the screen avoids the issue. Many platforms can display them as a chart object.
Another point is end-of-day reconciliation. The day's result should be measured as the change in equity at a consistent time, not the balance at different moments.
Logging equity at the start and end of each session adds a useful metric: the maximum drawdown within the session, which shows how bad it got even if it ended well.
Is equity or balance displayed during trading, and has the difference ever caused surprise?
