Pip value drift on cross pairs

On EURUSD, a pip is worth a fixed amount in dollars for a given lot size. On a pair like EURGBP or GBPJPY, the pip value is in a different currency, and the account converts it at the current rate. That means the dollar value of a pip changes during the day.

For most traders it is background noise. For scalpers who size by risk, it can create small but real errors. A position sized for 10 dollars of risk at the morning's rate might risk 10.40 by afternoon if the quote currency has strengthened.

The effect is modest on a single trade, but it can distort statistics. A journal that records results in pips will not match one that records results in money, and the difference grows with the volatility of the conversion pair.

Most platforms recalculate the value automatically at order time, so the issue is mainly in manual planning and spreadsheets.

Using a position size calculator that pulls live rates avoids the drift. Or sizing based on the current pip value shown in the platform for each order.

Has pip value variation ever caused a surprise in the risk on a cross pair trade?
