Session pivot points: self-fulfilling or just noise

Pivot points are calculated from the previous session's high, low, and close. Many traders watch them, which gives them some power as reference levels.

The issue in forex is defining the session. A day in forex has no official end, so each platform picks a cutoff, usually 5pm New York. If one broker's day ends at a different time, the pivots differ.

That leads to confusion in forums, where posted levels may not match the chart. The levels are only meaningful if everyone uses the same data.

Another question is whether price respects them any more than random levels. Studies are mixed, and the effect seems to depend on the pair and the period.

A useful test is plotting pivot levels across a few months and counting the touches that led to a reaction of at least a few pips, compared with arbitrary levels at similar distances.

If a real difference appears, there is something to use. If not, they are just lines.

Have pivot levels ever shown a measurable edge in testing?
