VWAP in a market without a central volume

VWAP, the volume weighted average price, is a staple in stock trading. In spot forex, the volume part is a problem, since there is no consolidated volume.

Retail platforms usually compute it from tick volume, which is a proxy. The result is a line that looks like VWAP but reflects only the broker's feed.

Still, it can act as a reference level. Many traders use it as a session mean, where price tends to gravitate during quiet times and from which it extends during trends.

The caveat is that the line differs across brokers, so levels others mention in forums will not match.

Futures-based VWAP, using the CME currency contract's real volume, is more reliable but needs data access. Some traders plot it on the spot chart as a reference.

As with any level, it is worth testing whether price reacts to it consistently, and whether the reaction is tradeable after costs.

Is VWAP part of the toolkit, and which volume source is used?
