Hotkeys: set them up once, test them forever

A good hotkey layout turns a six-click order into a single keypress. The speed difference is real, often a second or more, and for scalping that can be the whole edge.

But hotkeys have their own risks. Pressing the wrong key under pressure is easy, especially when the layout was changed recently. A key bound to close all positions is one stray press from disaster.

Some principles used by experienced traders:

Keep buy and sell keys physically apart so a slip is unlikely.

Put dangerous actions, like close all, behind a modifier key combination.

Practise on demo until the movements become automatic.

Print the layout and keep it beside the screen for the first few weeks.

Never change the layout in the middle of a trading day.

Muscle memory is the goal. A well-learned layout feels like part of the hand, and a half-learned one is a liability that shows up at the worst moment.

A good test is a stopwatch drill. Run through the full cycle of entry, stop move, partial close, and full close on demo until the whole sequence is smooth. If any step still requires looking at the keyboard, the layout is not ready for live trading.
