Leverage per scalp: the number that decides survival

High leverage lets a small account control a large position. It also makes a stop-out the likely end of a bad sequence.

The useful figure is not the account's maximum leverage but the effective leverage in use: total position value divided by equity. A scalper opening 5 lots on a 2,000 dollar account is using about 250 times, no matter what the broker's limit says.

At that level, a 4 pip move against the position wipes out a large share of the account. A few consecutive losses end it.

Most consistently profitable short-term traders run far lower effective leverage, often 10 to 30 times, even when much more is available.

Choosing the position size from risk per trade, as discussed elsewhere, usually keeps effective leverage reasonable automatically.

It is worth checking the number periodically, especially after adding to positions or during a multi-trade session.

What effective leverage is typical in a normal session, and how high does it go at peak?
