Hedging on the same pair: what brokers actually allow

Opening a long and a short on the same pair at the same time is a hedge, and some traders use it to lock a position during news. The rules vary by broker and by region.

Some accounts allow hedging freely. Others net positions automatically, so the short just closes the long. In certain regions, regulators ban hedging on retail accounts altogether.

Even where it is allowed, the economics are poor. Both legs pay the spread, and the hedge locks in a loss equal to the spread plus any swap. It freezes the position, but does not solve the underlying decision.

For scalpers, the more useful tools are exiting or reducing the position. A hedge also makes accounting messier, and the margin requirement may or may not be reduced, depending on the broker.

If a hedge is used, know the margin treatment and the cost of unwinding.

Is hedging allowed on your account, and does it ever make sense for short-term trading?
