The break-even stop trap

Moving the stop to breakeven once price moves in favor sounds safe. It also kills a lot of winning trades.

Normal price noise often pulls back to the entry before continuing. A stop at the exact entry price, plus the spread, gets hit on those pullbacks. The trade stops out at zero, then price goes to the target without it.

On the surface, breakeven exits are not losses. In practice, they are lost winners, and they add up.

The data usually tells the story. Compare the outcomes of trades where the stop was moved with those where it was left alone. Often the unmoved group has a better average result, despite having more full losses.

If a stop must move, a more tolerant location, such as a few pips beyond breakeven or behind a swing point, tends to work better.

Another alternative is taking a partial profit instead of moving the stop, which locks something in without choking the trade.

How have breakeven stops affected overall results?
