Scaling out: partial exits and the math behind them

Taking half off at a first target and letting the rest run is popular. It feels balanced. Whether it improves results is a different question.

Splitting the exit changes the shape of returns. The win rate for the first half rises, since the near target is hit more often. The second half has a lower win rate but a larger payoff. The combination can smooth the equity curve.

But costs apply twice, once per exit if there are separate orders, and the math is not always favorable. A strategy with a 3 pip target and 1 pip costs gives away a lot by splitting.

The test is simple: run the same trades with a single exit and with a partial exit, and compare the total after costs. In many cases, the difference is small, and the psychological comfort is the main benefit.

If it keeps the trader disciplined, that has value. But it should be a conscious choice.

Has scaling out improved results, or just comfort?
