Failed breakouts and the traders trapped inside them

When price breaks a level, enters follow, and then price snaps back, the traders who bought the break are left with losing positions. Their stops, just below the level, become fuel for the move in the opposite direction.

That makes failed breakouts one of the more tradeable patterns. The reversal can be fast and strong, since forced exits add to it.

Spotting it in real time takes discipline. The signs include a break on weak follow-through, a quick return inside the old range, and sometimes a burst of tick activity as stops are triggered.

The entry often comes when price re-crosses the broken level, with a stop just beyond the extreme of the failed move. The risk is tight, and the reward can be several times larger.

The risk is that some breakouts succeed after a retest, so the reversal setup can fail too. Careful stop placement and quick exits matter.

How do you separate a failed breakout from a retest that will continue?
