Tick charts versus time charts: what changes for scalpers

Post by Amanhasnoname »

A time chart creates a bar every minute regardless of activity. A tick chart creates a bar after a fixed number of ticks, so busy periods produce many bars and quiet periods produce few.

That changes how patterns look. Time charts show long, flat stretches overnight and sudden spikes at news. Tick charts spread the activity more evenly, so patterns form at similar scale throughout the day.

For scalpers, tick charts can improve signal consistency, since a 100 tick bar represents a similar amount of market action whether it is 3am or 3pm. They also reveal acceleration clearly.

The limit is the tick source. As mentioned in earlier discussions, ticks in forex come from the broker's quotes, not actual trades, so the count varies with the feed.

Another caveat is that most platforms handle tick charts poorly, with limited history and fewer tools.

It is worth testing both on the same strategy, to see whether tick bars bring any improvement.

Has anyone switched to tick charts, and was the difference noticeable?
