Calendar time zones and the early exit that was not needed

Economic calendars display times in a chosen time zone, and mistakes happen constantly. A trader sets the calendar to local time, then changes the setting, or the site changes it during daylight saving. The event appears at the wrong hour.

The result is either missing an event, trading right into it, or sitting out for an hour for nothing. When a calendar shows 13:30 and the actual release is at 12:30, the stop on the open trade has a very bad time.

Daylight saving transitions make it worse, since the US and Europe change on different dates, so for a couple of weeks each year the usual gap between London and New York is off by one hour.

The fix is checking the calendar's time zone setting at the start of each week and comparing a known event with a second source. Another option is using a single reference zone, like UTC, everywhere.

Also useful is an alert a few minutes before high-impact events, delivered by a device that is not tied to the calendar's own clock.

Has a time zone error ever caught you in a release you thought was an hour away?
