Exotic pairs and the scalping fantasy

USDZAR, USDTRY, and USDMXN make big moves, and big moves attract scalpers. The problem is the spread, which can be 20 to 100 times wider than on a major.
A pair that moves 200 pips a day sounds fine until the all-in cost is 15 pips per trade. A scalp targeting 10 pips loses before it starts, so the target needs to be far bigger, and at that point it is not really scalping.
Exotics also gap more, since they trade thinly outside their local hours and react sharply to political news. Spreads blow out during the overnight period, and some brokers simply stop quoting.
Swap costs are another factor. Carry on these pairs is large in either direction, so holding even a few hours across rollover has a visible cost.
There is a way to make them work, but it takes limited hours, strict spread filters, and expectations closer to short-term trading than classic scalping.
Has anyone actually made exotics work on short timeframes, and what did the cost structure look like?
