Thin NZD crosses and the cost of being a small fish

NZD pairs like NZDCAD, NZDCHF, and NZDJPY look tempting. They move decently, and the patterns on the chart look clean. The catch is liquidity.

Compared with EURUSD, the order book is thin. That means wider spreads, more slippage, and more erratic behavior around news. A trade size that fills instantly on a major might move the price on a New Zealand cross.

There is also the time-of-day effect. These pairs are most active during the Asian session, and then wake up again briefly at the London open. In between, they can go quiet, with drifting prices and large spreads.

The clean chart patterns often come from low participation. A smooth trend on a thin pair can mean a few orders pushed price without opposition, and it can reverse as soon as someone larger shows up.

If trading these, keep size small, use limit orders where possible, and measure the real slippage over time.

Anyone found a consistent edge on NZD crosses, or does the cost always outweigh the cleaner looking charts?
