Silence as a signal

Silence as a signal

Sometimes the absence of news is what matters. A central bank that usually comments stays silent. A government that normally responds to a currency move says nothing.

Markets read silence. If a currency is falling and authorities who might defend it don't speak, traders infer that they're not concerned or can't act. The move continues.

Conversely, a sudden series of calming statements can signal worry behind the scenes.

Silence is hard to measure. It requires knowing what's normal. A trader who follows the news flow regularly develops a feel for it: the market has been quiet on a topic that usually generates headlines.

Behavior in the price data can mirror it. A pair that lacks follow-through, with low tick rates and shrinking ranges, in a period when news should be driving it, suggests the market is waiting.

For scalpers, the implication is about regime. A market waiting for a catalyst offers little, and positions in it carry the risk of a sudden resolution.

The skill is patience, and recognizing that doing nothing is sometimes the signal the market is giving.

News or no news: when was the missing headline a better guide than the actual one?
