Swap-free accounts and the administration fee that replaces swap

Islamic or swap-free accounts remove overnight interest. That sounds like a bonus for anyone holding trades across rollover, though the economics need checking.

Brokers usually replace swap with a fixed administration fee or a wider spread after a certain number of days. Some charge a flat fee per lot per day, which can exceed the swap on a pair with a favourable rate. On pairs with an adverse swap, the swap-free account might be cheaper.

For pure intraday scalpers, the point is mostly moot. Positions closed before rollover pay nothing either way. The differences show up in spreads or commissions, which can be slightly higher on swap-free accounts.

Worth checking before choosing: whether the administration fee starts after a grace period, how it's calculated, and whether spreads or commissions differ from the standard account.

Some brokers also limit the leverage or instruments on these accounts.

A short comparison of total costs over a typical month tells which version is better value.

Which account type are you using, and did you compare the total costs?
