Index rebalancing and the currency flows behind it

Global equity indexes rebalance periodically. When a country's weight changes, funds tracking the index must buy or sell that country's stocks, and with them its currency.

The flows are known in advance, at least roughly. Index providers announce changes weeks ahead. The actual trading often concentrates at the close on the effective date.

A large inclusion of a country's stocks can mean billions of dollars of buying, and the currency feels it. A reduction does the opposite.

The effect on the major pairs is small and diffuse, since the flows are spread across many assets and currencies. On smaller currencies, it can be noticeable, especially around the closing auction of the relevant stock market.

Scalpers rarely trade these flows directly. But knowing the dates explains unusual activity in certain pairs and times that no news can account for.

Calendars from index providers list the dates. A glance each quarter is enough to mark the days when something might happen.

Most of the time, nothing visible occurs. On some days, a currency moves for reasons that only the calendar explains.

Has a move on a quarterly rebalancing date ever been traced to index flows?
