Boredom trades and the flat market itch

Quiet markets test patience. Price drifts in a tight range, nothing triggers, and the urge to do something grows.

Boredom trades have a distinctive look in the journal. Lower conviction, vague reasoning, small positions taken just to feel involved. They often come at the dullest times of day, like the late New York afternoon or the middle of the Asian session.

The outcomes are mostly poor. Costs are high relative to range, and edges are thin to none.

Prevention options include structuring the day around specific windows and closing the platform outside them, setting a minimum ATR to spread threshold that blocks trades in dead conditions, and having non-trading activities planned for the quiet hours.

Some traders use the downtime for review, journal updates and research. The time isn't wasted if it's used for improving the process.

Recognising the feeling is half the battle. A mental label, such as that's the itch, can create enough distance to avoid acting on it.

What do you do when the market goes quiet and nothing is happening?
