Japanese intervention risk: what changes when officials start warning

Japanese authorities have intervened in the yen several times, notably in 2022 and again in 2024. Before each episode, officials typically escalated their verbal warnings, from general concern to talk of excessive moves and readiness to act.

For anyone holding long USDJPY, the escalation is a signal to reconsider size, not necessarily to exit. Intervention can move the pair several figures within an hour, and it often happens at times of thin liquidity.

A useful exercise is to note the wording used in past warnings and where the pair was trading when action came. That gives a rough sense of how close the market is to a line, though there is no fixed level.

Another consideration is the carry: long USDJPY earns positive swap, which tempts traders to hold through warnings. A single intervention can wipe out months of carry, so the trade-off deserves an explicit calculation.

Do you scale down positions when warnings escalate, or keep a fixed rule?
