AUD and copper: the lagging companion

The Australian dollar is sensitive to commodity prices, in particular iron ore and copper. Copper trades on futures exchanges with real volume, and its price movements often show up in AUDUSD with a slight delay.

The relationship is imperfect, and it works better during periods when China's demand is the main market focus. A spike in copper after a Chinese data release often pulls AUDUSD higher a few seconds later.

Futures prices are available through many platforms and data providers, sometimes at a delay. The key is real-time access, since a delay of even five seconds kills the lead.

The relationship also depends on regime. In periods dominated by interest rates, copper's influence recedes. In risk-off panics, both fall together, and the link seems tighter than it is.

A modest use is as a confirmation tool. An AUDUSD breakout supported by copper is more convincing than one without. A divergence flags a weaker signal.

Because the data source matters, many traders skip it, which is why the effect is less arbitraged than the famous links like oil and CAD.

Is there a reliable real-time copper feed available at a reasonable price?
