Exotic pairs look tempting until the spread math shows up

USDZAR, USDTRY and USDMXN move a lot. That's what draws scalpers in. Ranges of 100 pips in a session make a 10 pip target look easy.

Then the spread appears. Quoted at 20 or 30 pips on a good day, and much wider at rollover, it swallows the target before the trade begins. Add slippage on top and the maths stops working.

Liquidity is the issue underneath. Exotics trade in a much smaller pool, mostly during their home session, with sharp gaps on local news. A stop can fill dozens of pips away.

Swap is the other trap. High interest rate currencies carry large swap figures, which punish one direction and reward the other, but only for positions held overnight.

There are scalpers who trade exotics profitably, usually in the home session, at tiny size, with wide targets that treat the spread as a fixed cost rather than something to fight.

Has anyone made exotics work, and what changed to make it possible?
