Scratching early is usually just fear with a better excuse

Most scratches are not risk management. They are discomfort management. The trade went slightly red, the heart rate went up, and closing it at breakeven felt like relief that could be called discipline.
The test is easy to run on paper. Take a month of scratched trades and mark where price went afterward. If the scratched trades would have hit the original target more often than the ones left alone, the scratching is not protecting anything, it is cutting off the best part of the distribution. If they would have stopped out anyway, the scratch is doing real work.
Blunt version: a scratch needs a reason that could have been written down before entry, like a level breaking, a news release approaching or the order flow changing. "It felt wrong" is only acceptable if that feeling has a track record.
A scratch also costs the spread, which on a tight scalp is a meaningful slice of the target. Do that three times in a row and the edge has been paid out to the broker without the market ever deciding anything.
Has anyone actually tracked what happens after their scratches, and what did the numbers say about the habit?
