The 5pm New York spread blowout and why it catches mid-trade positions

Every weekday around 5pm New York time, the trading day rolls over and liquidity providers pull back for a few minutes. Spreads on majors that sit at 0.2 pips can jump to 2, 5, or even 20 on less liquid pairs.
The trap is open positions. A scalp that looks fine at 4:58 can be stopped out by a spread spike at 5:01, even though the mid-price barely moved. Remember that a long position closes at the bid and a short closes at the ask, so a widening spread pushes the trigger price toward the stop from the exit side.
Protective stops are not immune either. Plenty of traders have seen a stop fire during rollover on a chart that shows no such price on the bid line.
The simplest fix is to be flat before the rollover window and not return until spreads normalise. Some also set an alert on the live spread instead of watching the clock.
Some platforms also freeze order modification for a few seconds around the switchover, so a stop that needed adjusting cannot be touched. That makes the decision to be flat before the window the only reliable protection, since nothing can be fixed once it starts.
How do you handle open trades near rollover, and has it burned you before?
