A re-entry protocol after a deep drawdown

After a significant drawdown, a trader faces a choice between returning to full size immediately and stopping altogether. Both extremes are risky. A structured re-entry protocol helps.

First, diagnose. Was the drawdown within the expected variance, or did something break: execution, edge, or discipline? The answer shapes the plan.

If the system is intact, return at reduced size, such as a quarter of normal, for a defined number of trades. Evaluate execution and adherence to rules. If all is well, increase in steps.

If the cause was behavioral, address it first. Take a break, review the rules, and add safeguards, such as automated limits.

If the edge is in doubt, return to demo or minimal live testing until the evidence is clear.

Write the protocol before it is needed. In the middle of a drawdown, the urge to recover quickly is strong and judgment is impaired.

The goal is regaining stability, not recouping losses fast.

What does the plan say about returning after a drawdown of a given size?
