Fed blackout periods and the quiet before the meeting

Before each Federal Reserve meeting, officials stop speaking publicly for about ten days. The silence reduces headline risk and often leads to lower volatility, as markets lack new guidance.

For scalpers, the blackout period brings a distinct environment: ranges compress, and the main drivers become economic data and positioning. The reaction to data may be larger since the absence of Fed speak leaves interpretation to the market.

Right after the blackout begins, there can be a final flurry of commentary, and when the meeting ends, the information flow resumes with a burst.

Tracking the calendar helps. During the quiet days, mean-reversion strategies may perform better, but the risk of a data-driven surprise remains.

Compare volatility and strategy performance during blackout windows with other periods. If the difference is consistent, adapt the parameters or the trading schedule accordingly.

An additional consideration is that spreads may be tighter, as liquidity providers face fewer unscheduled events. That improves the cost side of the equation.
