AUD/NZD: a cross that rewards patience and punishes impatience

AUD/NZD is a relatively quiet cross, with a tendency to range for long stretches, driven by the relative outlook for the Australian and New Zealand economies. Its movement is slow, and spreads are wider than on majors.

Mean reversion is common, and the pair respects ranges. But breakouts, when they come, can be sharp and persistent, driven by data surprises from either country or central bank shifts.

For scalpers, the pair is a test of cost discipline. A target of a few pips against a spread of one to two pips leaves little margin. Entries must be selective.

The pair is most active during the Asian and early European sessions. Outside those windows, liquidity is poor.

It also shows an interesting feature: the two currencies often move together against the dollar, so the cross is partly a spread trade. When both are hit by the same news, the cross may barely move, which means the cost without the movement.

Evaluate using the spread-to-range ratio and the frequency of tradable moves.

Does the pair deliver enough tradable movement relative to its spread in your sessions?
