EUR/CHF and the compressed range problem

EUR/CHF is known for tight ranges, a result of the Swiss National Bank's historical management of the franc. Daily moves are often small, and the pair appears calm.

For scalpers, the low volatility means that spreads consume a larger share of the potential profit. A spread of 1 pip on a pair that moves 30 pips a day is costly relative to EUR/USD with a 0.2 pip spread on a 70 pip range.

The calm hides tail risk. The history includes the 2015 shock, and since then, the pair has been vulnerable to sudden moves when the central bank changes policy or when risk sentiment swings.

Liquidity is thin outside the European session, and spreads can widen dramatically.

If trading it, restrict to the European morning, where activity is highest, and use measured position sizes. Evaluate whether the range is sufficient to justify the cost.

Check the spread-to-range ratio before adding it to the list of tradable pairs.

Does the pair's range justify its cost for the strategy in use?
