Using a dollar basket as an early warning for single pairs

EUR/USD moves because of euro news, dollar news, or both. A scalper watching only that pair cannot tell which. A dollar index or a custom basket of dollar pairs separates the two.

If the basket moves first and EUR/USD lags, the pair is likely to follow. If EUR/USD moves alone while the basket stays flat, the cause is probably euro-specific, and the move may behave differently.

The relationship can be built into a filter. Entries on EUR/USD aligned with the basket direction have more support than entries against it.

Constructing a basket from live quotes is simple: take the inverse of USD pairs where the dollar is the quote currency, and combine them into an equally weighted index. Futures-based dollar indexes exist too, with some timing differences.

Caveats include latency in the basket data, differences in composition, and unstable lead-lag relationships.

Test it on tick data with synchronized timestamps. If the basket's move in the prior seconds improves the hit rate of entries after costs, it earns a place in the system.

Does the strategy improve when filtered by the direction of a dollar basket?
