Server maintenance windows and the trade that could not be closed

Brokers schedule maintenance for server upgrades, usually on weekends, but occasional unannounced or mid-week pauses happen. During maintenance, trading is disabled, and sometimes the whole platform disconnects.

If a position is open during such a window, the trader cannot modify or close it. Stops and targets stored server-side remain active once the system comes back, but price might have moved considerably.

For scalpers, the main risk is leaving trades open near the scheduled time. Most brokers announce maintenance in advance, but those notices are easily missed.

Subscribe to broker notifications, and check the status page if available. Add known maintenance windows to the trading calendar.

Also consider the reverse: after maintenance, spreads and liquidity may take a few minutes to normalize. Entering immediately upon reconnect risks poor fills.

If the platform disconnects unexpectedly, have a backup way to reach the broker, such as phone support or a mobile app, to close positions if needed.

Where does the broker announce maintenance, and how far ahead?
