Trading only one pair: focus versus opportunity

Some traders choose to trade a single pair, arguing that deep familiarity with its behaviour gives an edge. Others spread across many pairs to find more setups. Both approaches have merits.

Focusing on one pair allows learning its typical ranges, reactions to news, and session patterns. It also simplifies risk management, since correlation between positions is not an issue. The downside is fewer opportunities and dependence on that pair's conditions.

Trading many pairs increases opportunities but makes it harder to know each one well, and correlated exposure can build up unnoticed.

A method to decide is to review your journal: are results on your most-traded pair better than on others? If so, focusing may help. If results are similar, diversification may add opportunities without reducing quality.

A middle path is a core pair plus two or three others with different drivers, such as one dollar pair, one cross, and one yen pair.
