Canadian data days and the oil hour on USD/CAD: details that get overlooked

USD/CAD has a personality of its own, and a few of its habits get missed.

- Canadian data lands at 8:30 New York time, the same minute as a lot of US data. On days when both countries release numbers together, price can whip around as the two readings pull in different directions, and the net result is often noise.

- The crude oil inventory report comes out on Wednesdays at 10:30 New York time. Crude swings can spill into the Canadian dollar within minutes, though the link between oil and CAD is looser than it was in some earlier periods. Treat it as a tendency, not a rule.

- Spreads on USD/CAD tend to widen right at releases and then settle quickly. A fast scalp placed one second before the number is a different bet from one placed after it.

- The Bank of Canada announcement and the press conference that follows create two separate moves. The statement drives the first, and the Governor's tone often drives a second, sometimes in the opposite direction.

- Retail positioning pages for the pair rarely help, because moves driven by oil or by US yields can swamp positioning-based ideas.

- Seasonal oil habits, such as heavy driving-season headlines, can shift the mood on the pair for weeks.

None of this predicts direction. It just tells a trader which minutes are likely to be messy and which are likely to be readable.

For anyone trading USD/CAD around the Wednesday oil number, does the move come from the number itself or from the reaction in crude, and which one do you follow?
