Account currency: does it matter for a EURUSD scalper?

Account currency is often chosen without much thought. For a scalper, it affects costs and risk in small ways.

What it changes:
  • Profit and loss on EURUSD is in dollars. On a euro account, it's converted, and the conversion rate changes your results slightly.
  • Commission may be charged in the account currency, which changes its value in pips as rates move.
  • Deposits and withdrawals in another currency incur conversion costs, sometimes with a margin above the market rate.
Considerations:
  • Hold the account in the currency you live and pay costs in, to avoid repeated conversion.
  • If most trades are on dollar pairs, a dollar account keeps results simpler, but conversion happens on withdrawal.
A worked example: €10,000 on a euro account, a 10 pip EURUSD gain on 1 lot is $100, converted to about €92 at 1.08. On a dollar account, it's $100. The difference is only conversion timing.
