VWAP in spot forex is a borrowed idea that needs a warning label

Volume-weighted average price is a staple on stock and futures charts. The calculation needs real traded volume. In spot forex, there's none to use.
Platforms that offer VWAP on forex pairs substitute tick volume, which counts quote updates. The result is a line that looks like VWAP and behaves like a time-weighted average with some noise added. It may still act as a reference level, because other traders watch it too, but it doesn't carry the meaning it has in equities.
A cleaner version comes from currency futures, where real volume exists. A VWAP on the euro futures contract tells where actual trades occurred, and spot often reacts to it.
If using the platform's built-in version, it's worth knowing which volume source it uses and how the session reset is defined. Some reset at midnight server time, which has nothing to do with market sessions. Others let the user choose.
A session-anchored version, reset at the London open or the New York open, is generally more meaningful than a daily one.
Has VWAP on a spot chart acted as a reliable reference, or is it mostly another moving average?
