Signs a pair has changed character

Pairs do not stay the same. A currency that was clean and rhythmic for a year can turn choppy, thin or jumpy after a policy shift, a change in a broker's liquidity feed, or simply a new regime. Scalpers often notice late because they blame the strategy first.
Things worth tracking per pair:
- Rolling expectancy over the last 50 trades compared with the previous 200
- Average spread and its 90th percentile by session, since a drifting spread distribution can erase an edge without any change in price behaviour
- Average five-minute range, as a measure of how much room the setup has to work
- The proportion of trades hitting stops almost immediately, a sign that noise now exceeds the stop size
If two or three of those deteriorate together, the pair has probably changed. A single bad week proves nothing.
The response matters. Pausing is better than deleting: move the pair to demo or minimum size, keep logging the same metrics, and set a retest date. Sometimes conditions return, and sometimes the strategy simply belongs on something else now. Forcing it to work on a pair that no longer suits it tends to be the expensive option.
How many consecutive weak weeks does it take before you sideline a pair?
