Scaling plans in prop firms: are they worth planning around?

Many prop firms offer scaling plans: the account size increases after reaching profit targets over a set period. They're attractive, but the conditions matter.

Typical conditions:
  • A profit target over several months, for example 10 across four months, a required count of withdrawals.
  • No rule breaches in the period.
Considerations:
  • Scaling increases absolute risk; the same percentage rules apply to a bigger balance.
  • Trading behaviour changes when the account feels bigger. Size should stay the same in percent.
  • Some firms reset drawdown limits when scaling, which can be helpful or harmful.
A worked example: a 100,000 account with a 5% maximum loss scaled to 125,000. The maximum loss in money rises from 5,000 to 6,250. If the trader's risk per trade stays at 0.5%, nothing changes in practice.

Scaling is a reward for consistency, not a goal to chase with bigger risk.

Has anyone been scaled, and did it change how you traded?
