Why a 3 pip stop feels bigger than a 30 pip stop

Same percentage risk, very different emotional experience. With a 30 pip stop, a 3 pip adverse move is noise and nobody flinches. With a 3 pip stop, that identical move is the whole account of patience. Each tick against the position is a large fraction of the planned loss, and the brain responds to the fraction, not the dollar amount.
Result: scalpers with tight stops often close at 1.5 pips down "to save the rest", then watch price turn. Repeat enough times and the real stop is never hit, the discretionary exit is, and the strategy statistics become meaningless because the logged loss is smaller than designed and the logged win rate is wrecked.
Worth checking in the journal: distribution of actual loss size in pips. A clean system shows a spike at the stop distance plus spread. A leaky one shows a smear of small losses well inside the stop.
Fixes people actually use: place the hard stop at order entry so there is no manual option, and reduce position size slightly so the dollar swing per tick stops registering. Smaller lots with a respected stop beat bigger lots with a panic exit.
Does your loss histogram show a spike at the stop, or a smear inside it?
