What actually happens to spread in the ten seconds around NFP

The spread shown on a chart is basically fiction during a release. A pair quoting 0.6 pips at 13:29:50 can be 3 to 8 pips wide at 13:30:00 and still 1.5 at 13:30:30, and most platforms only draw the last tick, so the ugly part never shows up. Brokers and liquidity providers differ a lot here, so treat every number in this post as an example, not a rule.
The sequence tends to go like this: spread creeps out a few seconds before the print as quoting banks protect themselves, then it either blows out or the feed freezes for a second or two, then quotes return wide and tighten in steps rather than smoothly. The freeze window is where the worst slippage lives.
For a scalper with a 5 pip target, a 4 pip spread is the entire trade. Entering during that stretch means paying most of the move up front even when direction is right.
Worth doing: write a small script that logs ask minus bid on every tick for a few releases, then plot spread against seconds from the print. That gives a measured "safe to enter again" timestamp for your account type instead of a guess.
How many seconds after a major release does spread get back under double its normal value on the pair you trade?
