Running a VPN while trading: when it costs pips

A VPN adds a hop, and sometimes a long one. Traffic goes from the PC to the VPN server, which could be in another country, and only then to the broker. A 30 ms path can become 90 ms without anything else changing. Some endpoints are far worse, and shared exit addresses may be flagged by the broker's security checks, leading to login prompts or blocked sessions.
Tunnel protocol matters too. A tunnel over TCP can stall under packet loss in ways that a UDP-based one does not, and a dropped tunnel with a kill switch means the platform loses its connection completely until it comes back.
There are cases where it helps. An ISP with a poor route to the broker can occasionally be bypassed by a VPN exit that has better peering. Public or shared Wi-Fi is a legitimate reason for encryption, though trading on a hotel network is its own risk.
The test is cheap. Log order round-trip times and quote delay with the VPN on and off during the same hour on different days, enough orders to see the median and the tail. If the tunnel stays, use split tunnelling so the terminal bypasses it, or pick an exit close to the broker server.
Has a VPN ever improved the route for anyone, or has it always been extra latency?
