Why price stalls for a minute and then jumps 8 pips

Price often sits in a three-pip box for a minute or two, then goes eight pips in a few seconds. A common explanation is "accumulation" followed by "the move". A simpler mechanism sits underneath: dealer inventory.
A liquidity provider quoting a client flow builds a position. Buy a few large clips from clients and the dealer is long, so quotes get skewed lower to attract sellers and offload. Until inventory is reduced the dealer might hold a tight, slightly skewed range. Once the position is laid off, in the interbank market or via a larger trade, quotes re-centre and price jumps to where the market was already heading.
For a scalper the stall is not a signal about direction, but it does have information about speed. A long compression at a time of day when range is normally wide can mean that quotes are being managed, and the release is often quick enough to make stop placement tight and slippage painful.
One workable rule is to avoid placing a stop just outside a compression box. Either size the stop beyond the likely overshoot or stay flat until a break has some follow-through.
What exit rule has kept you out of the first fast spike after a long squeeze?
