That "momentum burst" on the tick chart may just be bid/ask bounce

Watch a 50-tick chart on a thin pair and a pattern shows up quickly: price flicks up three or four ticks, then back down, over and over. A lot of that is not buying and selling pressure. It is the quote alternating between a bid-side update and an ask-side update when the spread is wide relative to the move.

Say the spread is 1.4 pips and the true mid is not moving at all. If the chart is built from a mix of bid and ask prints, it can swing by up to 1.4 pips on pure noise. Momentum filters and tick-count candles read that as direction, and the entry fires at exactly the wrong moment.

Two quick checks help. First, confirm which price the chart is drawn from, bid only or last, because mixing creates the bounce. Second, plot the mid price in an indicator and see how much of the apparent impulse survives. If the burst shrinks to nothing on mid, it was bounce.

The more the spread matters relative to a pair's tick size, the worse this gets, which is why tick-chart scalping setups often fail when moved from a major to a cross.

Has a tick-based entry ever survived a switch to mid price on your charts?
