Tick volume as a volume proxy: where it holds up and where it lies

Tick volume on a retail chart is the number of price changes the feed delivered, not contracts or lots traded. Spot FX has no consolidated tape, so that is all a chart can offer. The surprise for a lot of scalpers is that it still correlates reasonably well with real activity on liquid majors during the London and New York overlap, simply because more participants means more quote updates.
It breaks down in predictable places. A quiet pair at a quiet hour can show a burst of ticks from one dealer reshuffling quotes with almost nothing traded. Around major news, tick counts can briefly drop when liquidity providers pull quotes, even though real turnover is exploding. And any feed that filters or throttles updates will flatten the peaks.
A useful habit is to compare the tick count of a bar against its range. High ticks with a tiny range is churn. High ticks with a large range is genuine movement. Low ticks with a large range usually means price jumped through thin quotes, and that is the nasty one for stops.
Before trusting any volume-based signal, export a week of M1 data and count how often the highest-tick bars were also the biggest-range bars on your pair. What hit rate did your own feed give?
