ATR-based stops that include the spread

Fixed pip stops ignore changing conditions. A 4 pip stop is generous at 3 am and absurdly tight at the London open. Scaling the stop to recent range keeps the risk meaningful.

A common approach uses the average true range over the last ten to twenty bars on the trading timeframe, multiplied by a factor, say 1.0 to 1.5. The result adapts to volatility automatically.

For scalpers, adding the current spread to the ATR-based distance is a small refinement that pays off. During wide-spread periods, the stop widens accordingly and avoids pointless stop-outs.

Position size then follows from the stop distance, so risk per trade stays constant while the lot size varies. It sounds like extra work but is easy to automate with a script or a spreadsheet.

Testing the multiplier is worthwhile. Too tight and noise triggers the stop, too wide and the reward-to-risk deteriorates.

What ATR multiple works for stops on a one-minute chart, and is the spread included?
