Pick a VPS by ping to the broker server, not by the cheapest price

A VPS in the wrong city can add 80 to 150 milliseconds to every order, which is a lot when targets are measured in pips. The cheapest plan often sits in a data centre far from the broker's trade server.

Most brokers run their servers in a few well-known locations, commonly London, New York, or Frankfurt. Support can usually confirm the data centre, and a quick ping test from several providers shows the real numbers. A latency of 1 to 5 milliseconds is possible when the VPS and the trade server share a facility or a close neighbour.

Beyond distance, provider quality matters. Overbooked hosts steal CPU time, which slows terminal processing even when the ping looks fine. Disk performance and memory limits also get overlooked until the platform starts freezing.

A one-month trial before committing to a longer plan is cheap protection. Run the usual strategy, log fill times, and compare against a home connection.
