Swap-free accounts charge in other ways

Islamic or swap-free accounts remove overnight interest, which suits some traders. Brokers still need to earn revenue, and the cost often shows up elsewhere.

Common methods include wider spreads, an administration fee after a set number of days, or a flat commission on positions held overnight. Scalpers who close positions within minutes may avoid these charges, but the wider spread can apply to every trade.

Comparing the all-in cost per trade on a swap-free account with that on a standard one reveals the difference. Sometimes it is negligible, sometimes it is meaningful.

Reading the account terms closely is essential. Fees can be defined in ways that are easy to miss, such as charges after the first day or on specific instruments like gold.

For short-term strategies, the swap-free feature itself is irrelevant, so paying a premium for it makes no sense unless it is needed for other reasons.
