Win rate versus reward-to-risk at scalping scale

A high win rate feels good, and many scalpers chase it. But win rate means little without the size of wins and losses.

A strategy winning 80 percent with a 1 pip target and a 5 pip stop needs the win rate to stay above about 83 percent just to break even before costs. Any dip below turns it negative. After costs, the threshold rises further.

A strategy winning 40 percent with a 6 pip target and a 3 pip stop breaks even at 33 percent, leaving a margin. The experience is more painful, with frequent losses, but the maths is more forgiving.

Costs hit each profile differently. High-frequency, small-target setups pay the spread more often relative to the move. Larger targets dilute the cost per unit of profit.

Knowing the break-even win rate for a given payoff and cost is basic arithmetic that many traders skip.

What is the break-even win rate for the current setup, and how close is the actual rate?
